Faces of Monash – Don McKinnon
Published on 4th September 2018 in UncategorisedHow long have you been a member: 29 years.
When did you start playing golf: I didn’t start until I was 17 years old.
Your first course: The course was called Rugby League Country Club at Narellan, then became Camden Valley Golf Club.
What made you join Monash: I was a member of Mona Vale and played Monash occasionally with Max Krilich. He talked me and ‘The Sheriff’ Brian Hollis who was Sports Trainer at Manly into joining.
Lowest handicap achieved so far: 4…but only briefly
Favourite hole on the course: Probably the 13th like everyone else, it’s a beautiful hole.
Best course outside of Monash that you have played: Jacks Point New Zealand
Favourite Golfer of all time: Greg Norman/ Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus – I can’t separate them
Have you seen him play live: Not Tiger but I did get to see Norman and Jack at The Australian.
What course in the world would you like to play: I’d love a game at Ellerston
And your playing partners: My parents Harry and Laurie plus The Sheriff, all are deceased unfortunately.
Any funny stories at MCC: Playing Foursomes with John Gibbs (Gibbsy). It was my tee shot on 18, so he goes ahead and when I get down to the fairway he was in the water pulling his clubs out of the dam. He’d let his electric buggy take off into the drink and he was saturated from the chest down. I then had to break the bad news that I’d hit my tee shot in there as well so he’d have to go back to the tee and hit the alternate shot. He wasn’t happy and we still had another 18 holes to play!!
Finish this sentence, “I love coming to Monash because….it’s a great course, always in good nick and the company is always good.
