Monash Mixed Pennants team pipped at the post in a titanic battle

Oatlands 3 Monash Country Club 2 – The mixed pennants team travelled to Oatlands for the second round of the Mixed Pennants on Sunday. The standard of play in the match was outstanding with many birdies across the matches and even one eagle from the opposition on the 17th. Unfortunately for Monash, the opposition holed a number of putts near the end of the round which led to an extremely close series of games. Four of the five matches were halved and with the other match lost, Monash narrowly failed to pick up any points.

Monash were led away by Nancy and Cameron Fink. This was a very close match with never more than a hole in it. On the 18th Cameron had a 10 foot putt to halve the match, and with the pressure on he sunk the pressure putt to secure our first half point. Next off were Ingrid and Ian Burgess, they started well but unfortunately met a male player who was on fire getting several birdies and pars. Whilst Ingrid and Ian battled all the way, they unfortunately lost 3&2. Third off were Pip Waugh on debut and Gareth Dawber. They played some great golf which enabled them to get to dormie 3, however unfortunately the opposition finished Birdie, Eagle, Birdie to secure a half. At Number 2, Evie Lim and Dave Gregory were both making their debuts. They played well and seem to combine nicely. Evie holed a number of putts and having battled hard they also secured a half. In the Number 1 match, we had Debutant Bets Gregory and Nick Glover. The opposition started extremely well and were 3 up and two under par gross after 8 holes. However Bets played some fantastic golf occasionally supported by Nick to get to the 18th Hole all square. Unfortunately on the 18th hole, Nick had an 8 foot birdie putt to win the hole, the match and half the overall contest. Sadly Nick’s putt didn’t break as much as expected and the hole and match was halved, meaning Monash lost the contest. In the reserve match Eileen Rodwell and Russell Pearse, who had paired so well for the team last year, met an in form reserve pairing and whilst the battled hard, they went down 3&2. The condition of the course was excellent, the opposition were very good and the team did Monash very proud.

Next Sunday, the Mixed Pennants team have their first home match, teeing off at 11:32am. If any members fancy watching some great golf please come along and support.
